Bell Ringer: Appositive Phrases

Copy the sample sentence on one side of your notecard.

SAMPLE SENTENCE: Harry was small and tough, a boy going through life with his chin stuck out a mile.

SAMPLE SENTENCE: The furniture, a mixture of Logan crafted walnut and oak, included a walnut bed whose ornate headboard rose halfway up the wall toward the high ceiling.

SAMPLE SENTENCE: A slight bald man, he reminded me of a baby bird.

Copy the description on the other side.

A noun phrase identifying a person, place, or thing named in the sentence. Appositives often begin with the words a, an, or the. They always answer the questions : Who? or What?
